An Act Relating to the Freedmen's Bureau
and providing for its Discontinuance
July 25, 1868
U. S. Statutes
President Andrew Johnson
Senator Benjamin Wade
President of the Senate
pro tempore
Schuyler Colfax
Speaker of the
House of Representatives
This act was passed over a Presidential veto. After this act was passed the Bureau was shut down except for
Educational activities and payment of claims. The significance of this was the language clearly showing the
control of Congress during "Congressional Reconstruction."
