Deposition F Case of Hester Lancaster, No. 848.540
On this thirteenth day of October, 1908, at Jacksonville, county of Duval State of Florida, before me, J A Davis, a Special Examiner of the Bureau of Pensions, personally appeared Israel Farraber, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to him during this special examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says:
I am about 65 years of age. A ? laborer when able to work. My post office address is "General Delivery" Jacksonville, Fla. I have known the claimant for thirty-five years. I did not know her before her marriage, I have always known her as the wife of Abram Lancaster. I know Abram shortly after I was mustered out of the Army along about 1867. I did not know him in the Army though I remember seeing him there in the 33rd Regt I was in the 34th Regt - USC? Inf, and the two Regt used to be together most all the time. When I first knew Abram after the war he did not have any wife, or live with any woman. Hester is the only woman I know as his wife. I knew Jane Nattiel I knew her as the wife of a man named Baker. I heard that she used to be Abram Lancaster's first wife, but I didn't know anything about that. I know that Hester and Abram lived together a good long time and thou he went to St. Augustine and Hester staved here. They were not divorced. She used to come over there to see him and then he was taken sick and Hester went over there and brought him back here and after that he went back over there because he wanted to die there, where he was from originally. He and Jane never lived together after the war that I ? know of. I heard of Abram Lancaster's death, I was with him there it was about five years ago. They said he left a place in St. Augustine, but I don't know nothing about. I know Hester has never been married again since his death. I am not related. I have no interest, not a bit, in this claim. I have heard you need this disposition. I have fully understood all your questions. My answers have been correctly recorded. Israel (his mark) Farraber

Notes: This deposition firms up the claim of Hester Lancaster by another veteran. His testimony is critical to affirm the relationship between Hester Lancaster and Abram Lancaster and the time that Jane Lancaster was not his wife.
