American Missionary Volume 37, Issue 2 (Feb 1883): The Free Will Baptists have an excellent institution, Storer
College, at Harper's Ferry, W. Va., with 5 Teachers and 245 Students.

On October 2, 1867 Storer College in Harpers Ferry admitted its first students. The school was located on Camp Hill
on the outskirts of the town of Harpers Ferry. Storer was the first African-American college in West Virginia and was
established to educate former slaves. Frederick Douglass served as a trustee of the college, and delivered a speech
on the subject of John Brown there in 1881. Dr. W. E. B. Du Bois held a Niagara Movement conference at the school
in 1906. The school was closed in June, 1956.
