Besides being the Military Governor of the Department of the South, General Saxton was at first the
Quartermaster.

General Saxton was also the commanding officer for the black regiments raised. The first of these
regiments would be the 1st and 2nd South Carolina Regiment.(later renamed the 34th and 35th
USCT.
