Ned Loyd White was a slave in the Sea Islands. He and "Uncle Cyrus" had learned to read as slaves. In July 1862 they started a school from the Edisto refugees with about
150 children. This school was open for five months until northern teachers arrived. Ned was 40 to 45 years old and Uncle Cyrus was around seventy.
